Who needs Dental Oral Sedation?
There are many types of people who have avoided traditional anesthesia- now there's a solution!
Patients with Anxiety
It has been estimated that up to 90 million people in the United States avoid having their dental treatment done due to fear and anxiety. These people fall into many groups. One group is patients with anxiety. Such individuals have often had a bad dental experience in their youth that has stayed with them their entire adult life and has caused them to avoid the dentist unless they were in extreme pain.
Aversion or Tolerance to Local Anesthesia
The second group of people are those who have had trouble in the past "getting numb". Many people have relateded to us previous dental experiences where they were given local anesthesia but still experienced discomfort during their procedures. This may have been due to a variety of causes including anatomical nerve variations, individual responses to local anesthetic, type of local anesthetic used, and operator knowledge and experience with local anesthetic.
Severe Gag Reflexes
A third group of people are those that have severe gag reflexes that in the past have prevented them from obtaining dental care. This group of individuals often cause great stress for the dentist and themselves during their dental visit. Often, these individuals are embarrassed about their "gagging problem" and avoid the dentist due to this embarrassment.
Sore or Aching Jaw Muscles
Finally, there are the people that have a difficult time keeping their mouth open due to sore and aching jaw muscles. Dental procedures are difficult for these people because they cannot open their mouths wide enough or long enough for the dentist to do his/her work. This causes a great deal of frustration and complications for both the dentist and the patient, and often leads to an unpleasant dental experience.
